Managing Pain without Opioids

Opioid prescriptions for MO HealthNet participants peaked in 2010. MO HealthNet, Missouri’s Medicaid program, began working with healthcare providers in 2012 to find a way to reduce opioid prescription misuse/overuse .The biggest challenge for MO HealthNet was to implement strategies to decrease the overuse or misuse of prescription opioids while maintaining access to these medications for patients in need of therapy.

Our solution helped in limiting the dose and duration of initial opioid prescriptions and ensure safe dosing of chronic opioids, as a result Opioid prescriptions were reduced by 12%.
